Courtney Tomey is a Los Angeles-based photographer freezing the world around us into images that masterfully balance the energy and emotion of her subjects. In her experimentations with natural light and flash photography, her work becomes a fusion of street-style fashion and portraiture as she captures the vitality that emanates from her subjects.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tomey channeled her passion to record the world around her into a professional career as an artist. She began by obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Photography at California State University, Northridge and went on to grow her skills under fashion photographer Benjo Arwas as an intern at DailyLook, as well as celebrity fashion photographer and casting director Arthur St. John. Today, she works for cinematic wedding photographer Michael Anthony Photography and sister studio Marilyn Lou Boudoir.
Now, as she pursues her own distinctive artistic vision, she is uncovering stories of women empowerment, tenderness, and strength. Within her portraiture you do not only see the subject but the relationship that has been built behind the camera before a single shot was ever taken. She seizes the confident energy and intimacy that emerges as each subject grows more comfortable in front of her camera.
Often drawing on the vibrancy of the city and the ever-evolving landscape of Los Angeles, she juxtaposes the inherent hardness of the landscape with the traditional softness of femininity while exploring how the space informs the subjects and the fashion.
